Mesophotic reefs serve as vital habitats for many reef species, some of which migrate between shallow and deeper waters. Scientists are exploring the potential of these deeper reefs as "lifeboats" for coral species, as they may harbor genetic traits that could enhance the resilience of shallow-water corals if conditions worsen.
