The bottlenose dolphin, scientifically known as Tursiops truncatus, exhibits a streamlined and robust body shape characteristic of cetaceans. Adult individuals typically measure between 2 to 4 meters (6.6 to 13.1 feet) in length and weigh between 150 to 650 kilograms (330 to 1,430 pounds), although sizes can vary among different populations. They have a fusiform body, tapering from a broad, rounded forehead, known as the melon, to a slender, tapered tail fluke. Their dorsal fin is tall and falcate, curving backward, and their pectoral flippers are long and paddle-shaped, allowing for precise maneuvering through the water. Bottlenose dolphins also possess a prominent beak, or rostrum, which gives them their characteristic appearance.
