After mating, female Sally Lightfoot crabs carry fertilized eggs internally until they are ready to release them into the water for external development. Females typically seek out sheltered areas such as rock crevices or tide pools to deposit their eggs, where they are protected from predation and environmental stressors. Once laid, the eggs undergo a period of incubation, during which they develop into larvae. Larval development occurs in the water column, where the eggs hatch into free-swimming zoea larvae. These larvae undergo several molts and developmental stages before eventually settling back onto rocky substrates as juvenile crabs, completing the life cycle of the Sally Lightfoot crab.
