Juvenile sea lions undergo significant developmental stages under the watchful care of their mothers in colonies along coastal shores. After a gestation period of around 12 months, female sea lions give birth to their pups on sandy beaches or rocky outcrops within the breeding colonies. Newborn pups are born with a dense layer of fur called lanugo, which protects them from the elements and helps regulate their body temperature. During the early weeks of life, juvenile sea lions depend entirely on their mothers for nourishment, suckling milk rich in fat and nutrients to support their rapid growth and development. Mother sea lions provide vigilant maternal care, nursing, grooming, and protecting their offspring from potential predators and social disturbances within the colony.
