The yellow-edged moray eel (Gymnothorax flavimarginatus) is found predominantly in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, extending from East Africa to the Red Sea and reaching as far as Costa Rica and the Galápagos Islands. It inhabits coral and rocky areas of reef flats and seaward reefs, diving to depths of about 150 meters. Typically solitary, this moray eel often hides in crevices with just its head protruding, although it sometimes shares its space with other moray eels or fish species. It's mainly nocturnal but can be observed swimming freely in the morning and evening. Its diet consists of fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. The yellow-edged moray has been identified as a natural predator of the invasive lionfish in the Red Sea, indicating its importance in maintaining ecological balance. The eel can grow up to 240 cm, but a more usual length is around 80 cm.
