The Castle of Saladin, or Salah al-Din Citadel, is located 30 kilometers east of Latakia and 7 kilometers east of Al-Haffah on a ridge between two deep valleys, the castle boasts a natural defensive advantage with its elevated position amidst lush, forested landscapes. Initially fortified by the Byzantines in the mid-10th century, the site was later occupied by the Crusaders in the early 12th century, who transformed it into a formidable stronghold. In 1188, Saladin captured the castle after a fierce siege, marking a significant victory during his military campaigns.
