A Gentle Fade: Life in Bleached Coral.
In this underwater shot, a variety of fish swims calmly over a coral reef scattered with patches of bleached coral. The dark silhouettes of fish create contrast against the lighter, bleached coral areas and the vivid colors of healthier coral around them. The water is clear, allowing light to penetrate and illuminate the diverse textures and colors within the reef structure. Fish of different shapes and sizes, including some with darker bodies, weave through the reef’s coral formations. The ripple of the water’s surface is visible above, enhancing the sense of depth in the video clip.

Coral polyps, the tiny individual organisms that form a coral colony, each react uniquely to environmental stressors, often leading to varied responses within the same coral structure. Under conditions like elevated temperatures or poor water quality, polyps may react by expelling their symbiotic algae, zooxanthellae, causing visible bleaching. Interestingly, this response can vary even within a single colony—some polyps may retain their algae and color, others may bleach partially, while some may exhibit bright fluorescent colors. This phenomenon, known as "fluorescence," is thought to be a self-protective response where polyps produce pigments to shield themselves and attract heat-tolerant algae for potential recolonization.
