Krak des Chevaliers is a medieval castle in Syria, originally built by the Emir of Aleppo in 1031 CE, initial structure served as a stronghold for Kurdish troops, and later expanded by the Knights Hospitaller, a Crusader order, in 1144 CE. The castle changed hands several times, with various Crusader orders, local rulers, and empires controlling it. In 1271, it was captured by the Mamluk Sultan Baybars after a long siege and then used by the Mamluks as a military outpost. Today, it is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Crusader architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
