Krak des Chevaliers is a magnificent example of medieval military architecture, it sits on a strategic hilltop in western Syria, and was positioned to control key trade routes and served as a defense against Muslim armies and local rulers in the region. Part of a network of Crusader fortresses in the Holy Land, which included Montfort, Belvoir, Atlit, Arsuf, Acre, and Caesarea, Krak des Chevaliers could accommodate up to 2,000 soldiers and was considered nearly impregnable by its enemies. It resisted several sieges by Muslim forces until it was finally captured by the Mamluk Sultan Baybars in 1271 after the knights were tricked into surrendering by a fake letter.
