The entrance complex of the citadel was built during the Ayyubid period by Sultan al-Zahir Ghazi, and includes a large stone bridge over the moat, leading to an entrance fortified by massive towers. The Great Mosque, also known as Jami' al-Kabir, stands at one of the highest points in the citadel, it was built in 1213-1214 under Sultan al-Zahir Ghazi, it features a square plan with a courtyard surrounded by vaulted aisles and a rectangular prayer hall. The theater within the citadel played a crucial role in the social and cultural life of the fortress. It was used for various public gatherings and military training exercises.
