The Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus stands as a remarkable symbol of religious diversity and historical convergence. Completed in 715 CE by the Umayyad Caliph al-Walid, it is built on a site that has seen continuous religious use over several millennia. Initially hosting temples built by the Arameans and later the Romans, the site transformed into a cathedral under Christian Byzantine rule. In a striking display of religious coexistence, for about 80 years following the Islamic conquest in 634 CE, the cathedral served as a shared prayer space for both Christian and Muslim communities. Both groups would enter through the same door, with Muslims turning right and Christians left. As the Muslim community grew, the need for more space led Caliph Walid to demolish the old cathedral, commissioning the construction of the mosque we see today.
